Brain and nervous system

    Our approach to neurological care

Signals are carried by blood vessels, muscles and nerves, and processed by the brain. Diseases that affect the nervous system are corrosive and all-to-familiar: Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson's, cerebral palsy, epilepsy and ALS, to name a few. When one of these illnesses disrupts your wiring, the impact can be life-changing. SIU Medicine uses an interconnected team approach to help patients with brain and nervous system disorders.

Our departments of neurology, neurosurgery and psychiatry comprise a single-site outpatient clinic care center, the Neuroscience Institute, staffed by more than 50 physicians and medical professionals. The institute is the only state-approved, academically based, single-site neuroscience center in Illinois.

This multidisciplinary approach gives you access to a full range of specialty and subspecialty services, offering care for stroke, Alzheimer’s, brain tumors, spine disease, schizophrenia, anxiety, depression and more. Our faculty direct academic research in clinical and basic neuroscience as well as patient outcomes. They also participate in a wide portfolio of clinical trials that provide access to cutting-edge therapies for movement disorders, neuromuscular disease, neuro-oncology and vascular disease at two outpatient sites in Springfield and our affiliated hospitals, Memorial Medical Center and St. John’s Hospital.
